1 / What does Food Safe mean?
The food safe term is regulated and defined by Compliance Policy Guide which is maintained by the FDA.

Refers to the final, fired state of the glaze.

Food Safe is:
Free of lead & cadmium leaching.
​
All glazes provided for us at the ORPG at Food Safe, however personal use glazes may not be. Individual artists are responsible for properly using and marking pieces that these glazes are used on.
2 / What does Dinnerware Safe mean?
This term refers to the final, fired state of the glaze.

Dinnerware safe is:

Chemically durable (will not scratch or chip)

Free of surface texture that could potentially trap bacteria.

If it is Dinnerware safe, it is also Food Safe.
​
Individual artists are responsible for proper use and labelling of pieces. Consumers may inspect items BEFORE purchase for texture (cracks, pinholes, etc) when ensuring dinnerware safety on items that will hold or come into contact with food (such as the insides of mugs or bowls).

3 / Are the items in The Pottery Store Dinnerware Safe?
The Pottery Store acts as a consignment store for the individual members of the ORPG. As such, the ORPG and The Pottery Store are not responsible for ensuring or monitoring Food and Dinnerware Safety. Individual artists are responsible for correct usage, labelling, and quality of their pieces.

In general, our artists are experienced and ensure that Dinnerware safe glazes are applied and correctly fired before placing their items in the store for purchase. If you have questions about a piece you are looking to purchase, please inquire with the store attendant and they will reach out to the artist to verify.
